The Power of Words

Let’s just settle down for a moment.

Quiet our hearts. Take a deep breath before reading into this...

Life gets heavy sometimes. Work piles up. Family situations flare up. That voice in your head starts talking: “You’re not good enough. You’ve messed up. You’ll never get there. Such a Loser..” It can feel like a gut punch, like quicksand. Like you’re sinking and you need something solid under your feet.

You ever been there?

Maybe it’s tough news from the doctor. Or an unexpected letter in the mail with really bad news. Maybe it’s a relationship starting to crack. Maybe it’s a dream that hasn’t happened and you’re wondering if it ever will.

Or maybe it’s just that quiet prayer at night: “God, are Your promises still true for me?”

Here’s what I want you to hear today:

God’s promise is your rock. When you root yourself in Him, your words change. Your life changes. What comes out of your mouth changes.

Because words are powerful.

We all know what it feels like to hear, “Good job.” “I’m proud of you.” “Well done.” Those words lift you. They stay with you.

And we also know what it feels like to hear, “Failure.” “No good.” “You’ll never amount to anything.” Those words cut deep. Sometimes we’re still carrying them years later.

Words are powerful. They can heal, and they can wound. They can build up, or they can tear down.

But here’s the truth: the Greater One lives on the inside of you. I John 4:4, “Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world.” That means you are not empty. You are not powerless. The very Spirit of God lives in you.

Look at creation—God didn't whisper; He spoke life. "Let there be light," and light was! (Genesis 1:3). That spoken Word wasn't a one-time event; it set creation in motion, and it's still active. God's creative declaration is ongoing—His Word sustains everything.

Hebrews 1:3 tells us Jesus "upholds the universe by the word of his power."

Colossians 1:17 says in Him "all things hold together." The very fact that the universe keeps going, keeps expanding, is a testimony to the continuing power of God's spoken Word.

We see this in the heavens: the universe is still expanding today. Galaxies are moving farther apart right now—not because of some random force, but because God spoke "Let there be" and His Word is still carrying out what He commanded.

The light He spoke into existence is still shining, still stretching across the cosmos, still revealing His glory (Psalm 19:1). Every new observation of distant galaxies receding faster the farther they are is a reminder: God's creative Word hasn't stopped. It's alive, active, and expanding the boundaries He first set.

• One big study from the Dark Energy Survey (just released in January 2026) looked at millions of galaxies over six years. They measured how the universe has been growing and stretching for billions of years—and it's still doing it today. Their lead scientist said something like, "The universe is expanding, and the data shows it's been accelerating for a long time, with no sign it's stopping." It's like God's "Let there be" is still echoing out there!

• Another ongoing check comes from the Hubble Space Telescope (and now James Webb too). They keep watching distant galaxies, and the light coming to us is stretched (called redshift), showing those galaxies are moving away from us right now—farther ones faster. It's simple proof: space itself is still expanding, just like God spoke it into motion.

That same God lives in you. So when you speak, you don’t have to echo the darkness. You can speak light, you can speak LIFE!

But here’s the key—your words flow from what you’re rooted in. If you’re rooted in fear, fear comes out. If you’re rooted in bitterness, bitterness comes out. If you’re rooted in God’s promises, life comes out.

I will share another sermon very soon on Faith over Fear, because you impossible to have both at the same time, it's one or the other, Faith always outshines any fear in your life. False Evidence Appearing Real, your Faith is built on a solid rock, and Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word. I'll get more into this one soon.

“The Lord is my rock, my fortress, my deliverer” (Psalm 18:2). When life shakes, He doesn’t. When everything feels uncertain, He is still solid. And every promise God made is “Yes” in Christ. Not maybe. Not sometimes.

Yes.

Those promises aren’t fragile. They don’t depend on you being perfect. They depend on Him being faithful.

Look at Peter. He denied Jesus three times. Talk about failure. But Jesus didn’t cancel him. He restored him. Failure became foundation. The man who messed up became the man who preached and helped build the church.

That’s what grace does.

And Jesus still says in Gospel of Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” That’s not just a comforting sentence. That’s a promise you can stand on when you’re exhausted.

When you’re rooted in those promises, your words change.

You stop saying, “There’s no hope,” and start saying, “God is still working.”

You stop saying, “I’m done,” and start saying, “God’s not finished with me yet.”

You stop speaking death over yourself. speak Life...

Now let’s talk about the heart for a minute.

Forgiveness.

If your heart is full of unforgiveness, your words will reflect it. Sharp. Critical. Heavy.

But Scripture says if we confess, He is faithful to forgive. He forgave us at the cross. Completely.

If we forgive others, we walk free. If we don’t, we’re the ones stuck.

Maybe it’s a friend. Maybe it’s family. Maybe it’s someone who deeply hurt you.

--->>> Or maybe it’s yourself. <<<---

Some of you are still speaking punishment over yourself for something God already forgave.

When you surrender the junk—doubt, shame, bitterness—your words begin to change. They go from death to life.

Hebrews 10:23 says to hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, because He who promised is faithful.

Hold on. Stay rooted.

So how do we do that?

Trust His Word every day. Grab a promise. Write it down. Put it where you can see it. Stick a note on your mirror. Put in on your dashboard. Let it sink deep.

Maybe it’s “The Lord is my rock.” Maybe it’s “Do not fear… I will strengthen you and help you” Isaiah 41:10.

Maybe it's the entire Chapter of Psalm 91!

Let it get in your spirit.

Then share the life. Speak encouragement. No more hidden poison. Be the light.

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, thank You that You are our Rock when life shakes. Thank You that Your promises are still yes. Forgive our careless words and hard hearts. Help us forgive others—and forgive ourselves—the way You forgave us. Fill our mouths with life through the Greater One who lives inside us. Your Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalm 119:105). In Jesus’ name, Amen.

CALL TO ACTION:

This week, memorize one promise that speaks to your heart. If unforgiveness is weighing you down—toward someone else or toward yourself—bring it to Jesus and release it. Then speak one life-giving word to someone who needs it.

Who’s ready?

Let’s stand firm—rooted in God’s promises, speaking life, full of unshakable hope in Jesus.
